JOB SUMMARYBD Diagnostic Systems is seeking an experienced clinical microbiologist, who can apply their knowledge of bacterial and/or fungal identification and antimicrobial resistance for the development of a microbiology expert system or other clinical laboratory product.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:•To design and develop clinical microbiology products.•To work independently to evaluate and/or test microbiology products using prior clinical microbiology knowledge and techniques.•To design and conduct experiments and interpretation of results in the area of bacterial/fungal identification or susceptibility testing.•To interpret results and make conclusions based on microbial data generated from laboratory experiments.•To be able to provide answers and/or possible solutions for clients who have technical questions and/or problems, in the area of identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria.REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:•Expert knowledge of bacteriology and mycology and in vitro diagnostic methods used to collect, isolate and maintain these organisms, including growth requirements and detection methods commonly used in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Knowledge of selective, non-selective and differential media preparation and usage is desirable.•Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, including automated blood culture systems (Bactec™, BacT-Alert™, etc.), automated ID/AST systems (Phoenix™, Vitek™ 2, etc.), automated specimen processors (Innova™, etc.), and other in vitro diagnostic instruments used in clinical laboratory.•Knowledge of biochemical test methods for bacterial and mycological identification, including experience with automated commercial methods.•Experience with antimicrobial and antifungal agents, automated AST methods and performing standardized antimicrobic susceptibility tests, such as microbroth dilution, disk diffusion and agar diffusion test methods.•Knowledge and experience in the reading of antimicrobic susceptibility test (AST) results, and interpretation of these data utilizing AST standards, such as the CLSI M-100, M7, etc.•Ability to interpret microbiology laboratory test data and reports, and apply quality control and quality assurance procedures is desirable.•Experience working in a GLP laboratory environment and in developing and validating new laboratory test methods. •Experience using database management, spreadsheets, and laboratory information systems is desirable.•Experience in BSL-2-level laboratory safety precautions, including those for bloodborne pathogens. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEA Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in medical technology, biology, microbiology, or related biological science with a minimum of five years experience working in the clinical microbiology laboratory setting is required. Advanced degree and prior research experience is highly desired.
